After struggling for years to find a self-training regimen that worked for me, I stumbled into this. Do all 26 katas, in a row. It helps focus you, keeps you moving, gives you a workout, and forces you to practice a range of techniques. All in under 30 minutes, and burning more calories than running. I’m sharing this here to show that it can be done, in case it inspires others to try using kata as your self-training at home. If you only know 10 katas, no problem! Just do them all twice, plus 6 more for good luck. This training happened just before lunch, so I was able to go a little harder (75-85%) by the end. Another approach you might take if you need to do this in the morning before leaving for work, is to go very slow throughout (50% speed) but try not to take much break between katas. I plan to post another video showing what that would look like, and how the calorie burn would be different. Remember, this is just to supplement your dojo training. But there are a number of benefits to this, and it will make you realize many new things about the katas you hadn’t noticed before. I’ve done it so many times (been doing this a few times a week for over a year now) that I have the order memorized, but you should have a list of the katas somewhere for quick reference when you start. Jump to the end if you want to see my Apple Watch workout data when I'm done. Enjoy!
